The bible says in 1 John 5:14” This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” We are called to pray according to Gods will, anything else would be the wrong way to pray. This is demonstrated in James 4:3 which says ”When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”
How then will we know what Gods will is?
1. We need wisdom to discern Gods will , and we get wisdom by asking for it, as stated in James 1:45 -
“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”
2. We should spend time reading scripture in order to learn what His will is.
2 Chronicles 7:14 says “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. “A good way of doing this and a practical example for us to use is - God wants us to pray for each other. James 5:16 reminds us “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”
3. We can pray the Our Father taken from Matthew 6:9-13. It is a good prayer to use because this is how the Lord has taught us to pray, and we can be sure that its aligned with Gods will for us. This prayer can be expanded upon to incorporate our needs at the time, for example I am harbouring unforgiveness toward _________, Father help me to forgive them just as you have forgiven my sins. Personalising this prayer makes it easier to then pray other prayers – and it’s a good starting point for us if we don’t know what to pray!
Most importantly, just remember that God wants a relationship with you,
He wants to talk with you, so make a cup of coffee and sit down in your favourite spot and just talk to Jesus, like you would a friend, and watch your relationship grow…
